ME Software

Can I upgrade from a non-ME version of InDesign? top

Yes and no. All of the ME version products can be upgraded from the equivalent non-ME versions. However this is only true for upgrades and not for cross-grades.
For example: InDesign CS3 can be upgraded to InDesign CS4ME. CS4 can not be cross-graded to CS4ME. If you only own a current (CS4) version you will need to purchase a full license and not an upgrade.

I need 7 licenses of the Creative Suite. Can I purchase a site license? top

Yes, we can issue site licenses. Please contact our sales department for a price quote.

Do you sell educational licenses of ME software? top

Yes we do. To qualify for educational licensing you must study or teach at an accredited academic institution. Please contact our sales department for details and pricing.

I need to buy licenses for a non-profit organization. Is there special non-profit pricing? top

Unfortunately, no. There is educational and government pricing for the ME versions, but no general non-profit pricing. If your institution is not an accredited academic institution or government agency, you will need to purchase a regular license. Please contact or sales department for details and pricing on site licenses.

Can the ME version do everything the regular version can do? top

Yes. All functions of the regular versions are included in the ME versions.

Can the ME version open regular files and vice versa? top

Prior to CS4, there were a lot of issues with transferring files between ME and non-ME users. The ME version has always been able to open regular files, but opening ME files in the regular version has always been either impossible, or at the least difficult.

With CS4 these issues have disappeared in InDesign, Illustrator and Photoshop. This is because all three programs support right-to-left functions “under the hood”. In InDesign these functions are accessible with scripting and in the user interface using our World Tools product.

General Questions

Can I install your plug-ins on two computers? top

No. The licenses are specific to the computer originally used to obtain the license. Each installation needs separate license. We tried to make our plug-ins inexpensive enough that separate licenses for each installation are affordable. For some of our packages we have special 2 installation licenses which makes it more affordable to install on a second personal installation. If you have purchased licenses for InBook or InSefer, it is possible to get an additional activation for a laptop (or the like). Please contact technical support for assistance.

What happens if my computer dies and I need to transfer to a different one? top

License transfers are dealt with on an individual basis. License transfer approvals are subject to our discretion. If you need a license transfer, please contact technical support.

I just upgraded InDesign. Can I use my existing license? top

Unfortunately, no. Licenses for our plug-ins are specific to the installation of InDesign for which they were originally purchased. If you upgrade your installation of InDesign to a new version, and need to continue using our plug-ins, you will need to purchase a new license.

Do you have special pricing for license upgrades? top

Upgrades on all In-Tools plug-ins are free for the life of the product. However, the licenses are linked to a specific installation of InDesign. This means, that if you buy Running Headers (for example) for your installation of CS3, you can use the latest version of Running Headers in CS3 forever, even if we update and improve the plug-in 100 times. However, if you need to use it in CS4, you will need to buy an additional license. There are no "upgrade" licenses per se.

We have tried to make our plug-ins inexpensive enough, that additional licenses are affordable. Our plug-in are generally many times cheaper than similar products you will find elsewhere. For our more expensive packages such as InBook or InSefer, we offer licenses for InDesign upgrades at half price. Please contact sales for details. If you would like to upgrade from individual plugins to one of these two packages, we can deduct half of your original purchase price as well.

If you need more than one or two of our plug-ins, you will find these packages many times cheaper than buying them individually.

We have two designers in our office who both need to use your plug-ins. Can we use a two installation license? top

No. The two installation licenses are intended for a single user who needs to work with our plug-ins in more than one location (like on a desktop and laptop or office and home computer). They are not intended for multiple users. This is similar to the license issued by Adobe which allows two activations, but is not legal for use by multiple users.

Do I need to buy APID ToolAssistant? top

No. The demo versions will work even with an unlicensed copy of APID ToolAssistant. If you purchase any In-Tools license, APID ToolAsistant will be licensed automatically.
The only situation where you would need a licensed copy of APID ToolAssistant would be if you are using one of our freebees which require a licensed copy of APID (for example: “Page Range Memory”)

I already bought APID ToolAssistant. Are your plug-ins cheaper? top

No. We have a unified pricing structure, and APID ToolAssistant is included free with any one of our licenses.
If you bought APID ToolAssistant under the misconception that it was necessary to use our plug-ins, please contact our sales department. We might be able to help.

Your plug-in doesn't do exactly what I need. Can I get a customized version? top

Yes! We can customize our plug-ins to your personal needs. Let us know what your needs are, and we’ll work out the details!

What versions and platforms do your plug-ins support? top

Unless stated otherwise, all of our plug-ins support InDesign CS2, InDesign CS3, and InDesign CS4. The plug-ins are cross-platform and support both Macintosh and Windows.

Why don't I see separate plug-ins for Macintosh and Windows? top

All plug-ins with a “spln” extension are cross-version and cross-platform files. One file works in all supported versions of InDesign and on both platforms. The engine which runs and licenses the plug-ins is APID ToolAssistant. APID ToolAssistant has a dedicated version for each version of InDesign running under each platform. Make sure you install the correct version of APID ToolAssistant.

Installation and Licensing

I installed a plug-in and I don't see the API menu. top

APID ToolAssistant probably was not installed properly. You must copy the correct version of APID ToolAssistant to your plug-ins folder. For example: The file named “APIDToolAssistantCS4.InDesignPlugin” should be copied to the CS4 Plug-Ins folder on a Mac. The file named “APIDToolAssistantCS4.pln” should be copied to the CS4 Plug-Ins folder on Windows. If you are using CS3, the file name will indicate CS3 and so on. If you can't locate the APID ToolAssistant plug-in, please download the current version from here.

• Menu items do not appear until a document is opened. To see the menu options open a document or create a new one, and the menu options should become visible.

• If the menu options do not become visible after opening a document, you might have an older version of APID ToolAssistant which doesn't support our current plug-ins. The current version of APID ToolAssistant in version 1.0.47.
Please download the current version from here.

• Please make sure that all the required files are installed. Most of our plugins require a file named "@SavedPrefs.spln" to function properly. Make sure this file is listed in the "About APID ToolAssistant" list of plugins.

I just paid for a plug-in and I did not get a license file. When do I get it? top

License files are available for immediate download after paying for the license. To get your license file, you need to log into your In-Tools user account. After logging in, click on “My Account” at the top of the web page. This will display a table of all your purchased licenses. There are actually two tables on the account page. The top one lists activated licenses, while the bottom one lists licenses which were paid for, but not yet activated. To activate a license you need to do the following:

1) Install the plug-in in InDesign.
2) Select the “APID ToolAssistant...” menu item under the API menu.
3) Click on “Get License” next to the plug-in listing in the APID ToolAssistant window. This will bring you to the login page on our web site.
4) After successfully logging in, your license file while appear in the top table.

Okay. I see the plug-in listed on my account page. Now what? top

To download a license file for an activated license and change the status of the plug-in in InDesign from “Demo” to “Licensed” in InDesign please do the following:

1) Click on “Show License” next to the license which you wish to download.
2) After a second or two the text will change to “Download License”. Clicking on this will download a license file to your computer.
3) Note the location of the license file on your hard drive, and return to InDesign. From the same window which you clicked on Get License, click on “Import License File...”. Locate the file you have just downloaded, and click “OK”. The window should now display “Licensed for APID” next to the plug-in.

Power Headers

I can't type into the dialog to label header frames in CS3 Windows. What do I do? top

There is a bug in certain CS3 installations of Windows where the text field of the combo-box in the dialog to label header frames in inaccessible. We have not yet determined exactly which installations will have the problem, but we believe it has something to do with localized versions of Windows.

However, there is an easy fix. If you can not type into the combo-box please download and run this script. Each time you run the script it will toggle the working state of the combo-box. Make sure you only run it once! This fix will work with Running Headers version 1.0.5 and later. The fix should be permanent.

Power Headers version 2.0 fixes this problem, and the script is no longer needed.

I labeled a header frame and nothing happens when I update headers. What's wrong? top

Variables in the Power Headers plug-in are defined by character styles. The labels on the header frames simply limits the scope of the variables so that the only characters styled with the selected character style which are changed will be the ones in the defined header frames. If you do not set a character style or type in at least one character, the headers will not change.

Can I use more than one header variable in a header frame? top

Yes. As explained above, the variables are defined mainly by the character styles used. Simply type in the different header placeholder text, and apply to each header the unique character style which is used to define that specific header.

Will Power Headers work with anchored frames? top

Yes. The page of the anchored frame is determine by the text the frame is anchored to. The position (as in "First" or "Last") will be determined by the position of the actual frame.

My text is setup using anchored frames. When I update the headers, the text in the anchored frames is not picked up. What's wrong? top

There is an option to ignore stories less than a certain number of characters. This option is there for the most part, to improve performance. If you have headers in single frames, there's a good chance that the story is shorter than the minimum.

If this is the problem, there's two ways to solve it. The obvious way is to decrease the minimum story size. Setting it to 0 will enable all stories. This will however cause the headers to take longer to update. Another way of handling this situation would be to insert a large number of spaces at the end of the anchored text.
This can be handled with a GREP find/change: set the find options to your style and search for ".+" and replace with "$0[spaces]"

I have two text frames with text both on the same page. Why is the text from one frame picked up no matter whether I pick "First" or "Last"? top

It is important to understand how the logic works when finding the text order. Text order is determined by the position of the frame which holds the text. It is not determined by the position of the specific characters. The "First" text frame is determined by its borders, so if you have two text frames, the one whose top border is higher will be determined to be the first one. The same concept applies to the sides and bottom. The one whose bottom is lower will be considered to be "Last". Thus it is possible to have a frame which is both "First" and "Last". For example; if one frame is bigger and its top is higher while its bottom is lower, it will be both "First" and "Last".

When I update the headers, the master frames are overridden from the master page. What happens when I need to update the headers again? top

Headers are updated in frames with no regard to their status in regards to master pages. The headers will be updated even if the frames are detached completely from the master page (or never resided on a master page to start with).
